Bigfoot!

We have been reading about Bigfoot (AKA The Yeti, The Abominable Snowman, Sasquatch) and after we read several books about this scary creature, we chose to do a project about it.  We could choose to make a video interview with an expert, a Wanted poster, or a model.

We also created some found poems about Bigfoot.  We chose a page of text form one of the books we read and blacked out the boring language and left the interesting language.

Here are some examples:

We are still finishing our project work, but here are a couple of examples. More models, posters and videos to be posted later.... !!

Middle Miramar Mural with Gillian

A lot of us like mythical creatures and fantasy stories and movies in Room 1 and when Gillian asked what we would like to do on Ms Burke's release day it was easy to decide! We made this beautiful mural to celebrate The Hobbit made by Weta in our community, Miramar. First we (Room 1) talked about what sky we should choose. The choices were stormy sky, clear sky and sunset sky. We all agreed that the sunset sky would be perfect, plus most of the class voted for this sky. We made the sunset sky by merging red, orange, yellow and white paint.

Secondly, we made houses, creatures, people and extra pieces for the back drop by drawing the creatures or houses that we chose on paper. Then we coloured them in with either coloured pencils or paint, or even both.

Finally, we glued all the pieces onto the backdrop, which included the sunset sky.

We all enjoyed this day with Gillian even though it took a whole day (and an hour to clean up). The finish mural was AMAZING!!

PS Flynn has just completed an amazing title for our mural. Watch this space...

Super Squid!

In Room 1 recently we read a book about a Super Squid. We read this book because someone in our class talked about how squids shoot ink and we had signed our Class Treaty in ink. We had also read another book about how writing with pens came about and they talked a lot about ink.

After we read the book we went on to draw the squid. We drew the squid with chalk pastels. They all looked really good. But then we did some shading, and they looked amazing, almost like a real photo. Just to make it even better, we flicked white paint on to create bubbles. What do you think?

Then at writing time we described our Super Squid. Come in to Room 1 and have a look at our writing books to read our awesome descriptions!

Maths Games Room 1 Style

Early in term one Room 1 made maths games . We chose our own groups of 1 to 4. We made sure that we planned our game properly so that others could understand how to play it. The tricky part was to get every single detail on the plan.

Next we made all the different pieces  like the dice ,counters ,money, board and box for the game. Then we decorated the pieces  with coloured pens, pencils, coloured paper and paint. At the end of making our games we made the instructions.  That was the tricky bit! We also wrote how old you had to be to play, how many people can play and how it works. It took about two weeks to make the games.

Finally we had to test our games. We played them step by step to make sure they worked and if it did not work we had to problem solve and fix it . It was fun getting to explain our games to the whole class. We made sure everyone  knew how to play the games so we could play the games properly.
